Summer Time-- A Time for Change

Every school year, in September (or late August for some) educators dream of having a perfect school year--- they think of the changes they would make in their classroom management plans, they promise to do better with using various methods to teach and assess all of their students, and hope to include new lessons that will excite and engage students. At least that is how I dream every September--- and usually I will meet some of those goals.

But right now, with the school year close to ending (my last day with the students is June 10th), I can honestly say I'm excited about having a vacation--- I'm antsy to get outside and explore the neighborhoods around where I live, do some traveling (a week-long trip to FL to visit my long time childhood friend and her family is in the works), and a future engagement is probably not too far away either. These summer plans remind me that I am a human being who has my own personal life, away from teaching--- as much as I often gear my life around my job.

Two weeks in my summer vacation, it usually hits me: okay I'm ready to go back! And while I know I can't jump back into the classroom by mid-July, I CAN do some professional developing in various ways. I hope to, in the coming weeks, share my tips (and other educators are welcome to chime in too) about how a teacher can (for cheap) do various tasks that will help grow our understanding of what it means to teach science. Students, upon entering our classrooms, should realize they are true scientists--- this is my ultimate goal as an educator: to teach the sills and provide true scientific experiences to each of my students based on how they learn and based on their interests.

I hope all educators have a wonderful rest of the school year--- our eyes and minds should stay focused on September and what we need to do to prepare for another excellent school year.

My best,
Miss K.

May 29, 2010 Update:
Check out the Online Resources and towards the bottom you will find two new categories to assist you with your summer professional development plan: "Science Professional Development" and "Online Books for Science Teachers". The professional development category includes links to the latest science standards from AAAS, NSE, and other areas. The online books are a collection of books that have been recommended by the NSTA (National Science Teachers Association)--- the few books I have up already helped me save over $200 by finding the online versions. I hope these are valuable resources to you!
